MOVEmber – Get Moving with GIANT Word Winder

Greetings!

As a part of MOVEmber, a global initiative to help get you moving in the month of November, we wanted to focus our post this week on ways you can use GIANT Word Winder and GIANT Math Winder to help get your classes moving!

We met a Physical Education teacher this fall at the National Summer Learning Conference in Baltimore and she had some great ideas on how she could incorporate GIANT Word Winder and GIANT Math Winder in her classroom. We loved hearing her ideas and we even thought of a couple of our own.

Here’s one of our favorites:

Set-up:  Imagine that you split up your PhyEd class of 24 students into 4 groups. Each group of 6 plays with just 4 GIANT Word Winder boards, splitting up the game into four sections. The 4 GIANT Word Winder boards are be placed in a 2×2 grid and the group of 6 students at each set of boards are split up into 3 teams of 2.

Game Play:  Each team is given 1-2 minutes to try to find the longest word they can find on the boards. When the minute is up the team with the longest word then plays it and assigns the other 2 teams they are playing with the same number of Jumping Jacks, or Push-ups, etc. that there are letters in their word they found.  Example: If your word was PLAYING, you would assign 7 exercises to the opposing teams. After their exercises are complete, each group rotates to the next set of boards on their right, giving them a new set of boards to play on. The team will remain using the same color chips at each rotation. The game can continue like this until there are no more letters left to use on the boards, or no more words to make. Or you can make up your own rule for how to end the game play.

Math Variation: You must do the number of calisthenics as the equation equals. Example 2+4=6, the opposing teams would do 6 exercises.

There can be different variations of this game played, of course, and this is just one idea, but hopefully this is just the beginning of incorporating all kinds of activities and learning into playing with the GIANT Word Winder and GIANT Math Winder games.

So we have a new goal…Physical Education curriculum for GIANT Word Winder and GIANT Math Winder. Who wants to help? Email me at more ideas [email protected] with any ideas!

Thanks for playing and keep MOVING!

Claire
